FAQs
What is the league schedule like?
- Registration Opens — 4th November 2009
- Registration Closes — 18th November 2009
- Draft Night: — 20th or 21st November 2009 (TBC)
- League starts — 29th November 2009
- League Ends — 7th March 2010
- Finals weekend — 13th &14th March 2010
*Disclaimer: the above schedule is an outline and may be subject to change.
Introductory clinics will be held on 15 and 22 November 2009 for players who are new to the game and/or players who have never played the game competitively.
Weekly league games will be held each Sunday beginning from 29 November 2009 until 7 March 2010. Players are advised to keep 29 November 2009 free as team captains will only be informed of whether their team will be playing on the first week during the draft night on 20/21 November 2009.
The league will end with a Finals Playoff Tournament which will be a two day event falling on 13 & 14 March 2010. Regardless of the performance during the league, every team will have a chance to compete to be “Finals’ Champion”.
On the afternoon of 14 March 2009, for the first time ever there will be an all-star “rookie game” between two teams made up of the best-newcomers (i.e players who are playing in their first league). These two rookie teams will accordingly be captained by the two most inspiring captains of the league.
League Party/Prize presentation will be held on 13 March 2010.
During the duration of the league, teams may play ‘double headers’ (i.e. back-to-back games played on one day).
What are the timing of the games:
Games will be held on Sunday afternoons. For the regular season, there are two sessions allotted each day:
- Early sessions are from 2.30pm to 4.15pm
- Late sessions are from 4.30pm to 6.15pm
Each session lasting 105 minutes should be sufficient for the completion of each game which includes a half-time break (10 minutes), 3 time-outs (2 minutes each) and “hard-cap”.
“Hard-cap” is the ending of a game once a predetermined time for the game has elapsed and after the current scoring attempt is completed. If the score is tied at such point in time, the teams play until one additional point is scored.
Details of the Finals Playoff Tournament will be provided later.
What are the league fees and how do I make payment:
Fees (general) : S$35
Fees (students) : S$25 (applies only to youths 18yrs and below)
Fees (captains) : S$25
+ League T-shirt : S$20
+ UPA Fees : S$20 (for non-members)
Floater Fees : S$10/game
*Important*
Please note that League Fees and UPA Fees are compulsory. Payment of League T-shirt fees is optional. If you do not have a League t-shirt from previous Leagues you will have to purchase one.
Please note that there is a strict “No Pay—No Draft” policy. This means we will only include registered players in the draft process if they have paid their league fees in full before 2359 hrs on the payment deadline date.
In the past, organisers have had difficulties collecting fees in a timely manner during leagues and this may contribute to administrative and cash flow problems. By adopting this policy, we hope to avoid such problems as well as to discourage those players who may not be fully prepared to participate in the league from registering.
Payment can be made via:-
(a) Cash during the Clinics;
(b) Internet transfer to POSB Savings Acct 056-65764-9
*Please state clearly your name as per registration and that you are paying for the winter league

How are teams formed?
Teams are drafted through a ‘hat’ method. Using the data provided by players in the registration form, the team captains and league organisers will assess and group players into ‘hats’ based upon several categories like experience, skills, fitness and attendance.
Captains then take turns to draw names out of each ‘hat’ group to form their teams. Players will be randomly assigned (computer generated program) to form each ‘hat’ group. In this way, we aim to ensure a relatively even spread of experience and skill levels across all teams to provide for more challenging games. From this mixing, we also wish to encourage more interaction amongst players of various backgrounds.
Is there a Honey Rule?
The ‘Honey Rule’, where spouses/couples request to join the same team, is not applicable in this league. Sorry!
Can I play request to be on the same team as my friends?
To encourage new players/beginners to play Ultimate, we allow players to pair up and request to be drafted into the same team. The following conditions apply:
- One or both players must be a newbie. *Important: a newbie is defined as someone who has never played before in any league or competition either locally or overseas. Any registrant found in breach of this rule will be immediately withdrawn from the league and have his/her fees forfeited. For purposes of determining a newbie, a player who has only taken part in Grab Huck Score will still be considered a newbie.
- Only pairs of two (2) players are allowed. If you have a larger group of friends who are beginners, please still only form pairs. One of the main objectives of this league is to encourage intermingling and interaction amongst players. In addition, the drafting process is designed to spread out the various skills/experience levels across all teams.
- In the registration form, please indicate under the Remark column with whom you are pairing up.
What is the league format?
TBC. Pending final number of registrants.
What are the game rules?
Games are played on standard-sized fields, 7 players vs 7 players, with rolling substitutes at the end of each point scored (subject to certain exceptions).
Game total of 15 points, or Hard Cap at 75mins, whichever occurs first.
Note:
- A hard cap is the ending of the game once a predetermined time of game has elapsed and after the current scoring attempt is completed. If the score is tied, the teams play until one additional goal is scored.
Half-time occurs when one team first reaches, or exceeds, half the game total score, or half of Hard Cap time allocated. E.g. during a league game, half-time occurs at either 7 points or at 35 mins, whichever occurs first. Half-time lasts 10 mins
Time-outs – each team gets one time-out per half, plus one ‘floating’ time-out which may be used in either half (total 3 time-outs per team per game). Each time-out lasts 2 mins.
- RULES IN FULL –WFDF 2009 Rules
Are ‘floaters’ allowed in this league?
‘Floaters’ are players who have not registered for league but wish to participate in a game or play on an ad-hoc basis.
We allow floaters but strongly discourage “regular” floaters who turn up every week. Floaters will have to report to the league organisers. Teams that require floaters will inform the organisers. Opposing teams have to agree to the number of floaters to be picked up by each team. The organisers will allocate the floaters randomly. While we will try to be as accommodating as possible, we are unable to guarantee floaters will be given a game.
Floaters may approach the league organisers or team captains. Please note that Singapore-based floaters are subject to a S$10 fee per day if they are accepted by the captains concerned. Floaters are to pay the fee to the organisers before the start of play.
What about visiting/“out-of-town” players?
We continue to extend our warmest welcome to “out-of-town” players who are visiting or passing through Singapore to join us and share their experience with our community. For visiting “out-of-town” players the floater fee is waived.
If however your stay is prolonged or extended, we will try to assign you to a team for the duration. In this case, the league fees may be chargeable. For the avoidance of doubt any out-of-town player who wishes to play for more than two weeks will have the pay the full amount of the league fees.
Are there any introductory clinics for beginners or those who just want to check out Ultimate?
Yes. There are a series of clinics planned just for you! We encourage anyone who is interested in picking up the sport or would like to have a brief introduction to the sport to attend the clinics. ALL ARE WELCOMED!
For new players who are interested in registering for league, the clinics are a beginner-friendly way to find out the basics of the game. Try out the game before committing to the league.

Is it possible for the newbies to go for the clinic and not join the league?

Sure. I don’t see why not. You might even like it so much that you decide to take part anyways

“a beginner/newbie is defined as someone who has never played before in any league or competition either locally or overseas”
does this include tournaments such as grab huck sore, ivp, interjc, surf and sweat, waikiki etc…?

UPAS sanctioned competition or league. That means if you didn’t have to pay UPA fees for the local tournaments, you are a “newbie”. For international tourneys, those that are covered under the UPA calendar will be applicable.
In a nutshell, Alex, most of the ones you cited above will not be considered.

If you say that students are only applicable to people that are under 18 years old, might as well put it as PEOPLE UNDER 18 YEARS OLD. Isn’t easier? By putting student, you are misleading people.
If I remember correctly, student rates have NEVER BEEN so strict and unforgiving. Maybe you guys want to reconsider it.

I have a few doubts to clear, don’t mind me.
1. Is the league t-shirt optional, as it was originally stated in the forum?
2. How are we to make payment by cash supposing the registration closes before the first clinic session, which if I am not mistaken is planned for on the 15th?
That’s all for now, thanks!

Hi,
The league t-shirts are optional.
As for the payment, your observation has been noted and put up to the commissioner for clarification.
Please do check the homepage and FAQs in a couple of days for your answer.

Hi Aaron,
There will be list that is updated weekly that will reflect all those who have registered and paid in full. This will most likely be put up towards the end of Sunday or Monday morning starting from the 8th.

hi can we make changes to our registration once we submitted?
Winter League Comm 09/10 said,
November 6, 2009 @ 2:31 am
As of right now. You will have to submit your changes to the league email address at winterleague0910@gmail.com with your needed changes.
An alternative is to simply re-register and we will take the later of the 2 registrations to your final one.
I understand this is not ideal and we are working on a way to have the registrations self-editable, so I do ask for your patience in this matter.

Hi there. I think a lot of us are wondering whether JC2 students who will be out of school soon are counted as students? Plus, most of the JC2 students are over 18 already so what are the fees that we’re supposed to be paying?
Maybe you might want to clarify the ambiguity there regarding the fees because I think a lot of us are very confused over it. =D Thanks!

Hi Si Jie,
Thanks for the email. What we wanted to have was an artificial cut-off at the JC level. It is true that most people in JC2 would have turned 18 by now and thus we have amended the requirement to include students who are 18yrs old and below. Hope this clarifies and clears up the ambiguity.

Hello again. I would like to ask where exactly are the Brewerkz and Parkview Fields? Sorry but I’ve heard of neither! =(
And I thought league t-shirts were optional a couple of days ago.. How come it’s compulsory now for those who don’t have any past league t-shirts?
Thanks! =D

I think several parts of the blog should be updated as soon as possible to help avoid confusion, example being the jerseys whilst being said to be purely optional is stated that it is a must for those without any previous league jerseys.
&
If the artificial cut-off at the JC level was amended to help the J2s who are 18 & below. How about the Poly students out there who are year 3s, making them 19 or 20. Our school fees arn’t very cheap.

hello where’s the list of registered players? I’m sure we all want to form our own fantasy teams already. (without the hassle of going to draft, sending emails every week, shouting on the sidelines and getting flustered, i.e. captaining)
and Re second bullet on buddy rule, I’ve never heard of a pair that consisted of threes or fours or for that matter, fives. Always thought pairs came naturally in twos. =D

Hi Shawn,
I am sorry to say this but unfortunately you would have to pay adult fees.
Hope you understand that we have a cut off at 18yrs old.
Thanks

What’s the rationale of having a student price? To help students who’re not financially independent right? So if poor old Shawn’s still a student despite being 19 years old, why not extend that discount to him? Just musing.

shawn said,
November 16, 2009 @ 4:52 pm
yeah, whats the rationale behind student price, if I, a STUDENT, although19, cant pay student price?! why not just split 18 and below and above 18, why the vague ‘student but 18 and below only’? then whats the point of being a student, albeit an overaged one, come on, is it a crime to retain?!?!?! thanks sharity elephant, and yes aaron, the poor old shawn is nwahs.
come on committee. pls explain. thanks.

LUV 09/10 Organizing Committee
HI Shawn, Sharity Elephant and others,
The intention of the concession was to capture youths 18yrs old and below. The use of ‘student’ is thus admittedly inaccurate as a classification and we apologize for any confusion caused.
Hope this clarifies any confusions on this matter

I think we’ll need some clarification on some of these vague issues. Like the under 18 rule, why don’t we extend to all poly and jc students? i think that will be more of a fair treatment. And some of my friends who are interested in the league can longer register. Is there a problem withe the registration system or it is already filled up? Can we expand the number of teams? Hope to hear from the league comm soon.
